here’s the final piece (to cover the 1980s):

  • just about bone stock with hardtop, full doors, heat, a/c, power steering, etc.
  • rebuilt AMC 258 with less than 1000 miles on it
  • T18 four speed
  • Dana 300

we’ve got our new website up and running for the ’08 Cross-Country Willys trip.

Cross-Country Trip ’08

Project Roach Motel and Project Go-Devil will now be on the new site. we have also posted a link to the route we will be taking.

Cross-Country Trip for ’08

•January 1, 2008 • Leave a Comment

we’re planning a cross-country trip with the 1950 CJ-3A and the 1948 CJ-2A leaving August 1, 2008.

proposed route:
Northern VA –> Moab –> California
California –> Toledo –> Back to VA.

that being said, there’s a lot of work to be done (especially on the 3A) in order to make this happen. we’ll have a website set up for the trip in a few days, with a link to follow the progress of the jeeps in order to prepare them for this trip, and when under way the progress of the trip itself.

more to come in the next few weeks. happy new year.

transfer case died today…

•May 14, 2007 • Leave a Comment

i’ve been hearing this totally sweet whining for a while now whenever I drive the CJ5 at speeds.  it was comming from the transfer case. at first i just thought it was the gears (since the old Spicer 18 transfer case isn’t exactly known for being a “silent” case), then i realized it was a worn bearing and intermediate shaft–which is a pretty common problem with this t-case, especially after 50 years.

i was driving north out of leesburg yesterday and all of a sudden the wheels locked up and the transfer case made this awesome gear grinding sound. i was able to get it off the road into a parking lot of a nearby middle school.

this morning, thanks to paul–who has rescued me in this dammed heep more times than i’d like to admit–we were able to pull the driveshafts and tie a tow strap from his XJ and pull the old CJ5 back up the hill to the shop.

so i guess it’s time to start rebuilding one of those Spicer 18 transfer cases that has been laying around in my barn… more to come on that one.

finally after a good month or so of waiting, i was able to place an order for a new borg-warner t90 transmission for the ’57 cj5.

it arrived today via ups. hopefully it’ll go in the jeep this weekend and we’ll have the CJ5 up and running as a daily driver soon.

stuck in a frozen mud pit

yesterday puff in his pathfinder and steve in his lifted xj wanted to go over to the gaslines to go wheelin. i agreed to drive the tj over there and paul wanted to take zeke to get him out of the house for a bit.

it started out fine like everytime you go wheelin’. we hit the gaslines and ran down through the pine trees with the huge ruts at the greenway to the powerlines. then we decided to go back up to the gaslines through the woods.

i had the bright idea of taking this trail off the main one that goes through the woods towards sicolin. we make it almost to the end of the trail and then there’s this kickass mudpit that was all covered in ice. i drove through it first, the tj had a bit of trouble since the ruts were really deep and there was a lot of ice to break (haha not to mention the bald boggers).

the pathfinder made it through next by strattling the ruts around the pit. then came the xj and it nose dived right into the pit and got pretty badly hung up. i tried pulling him the rest of the way through the pit with no luck.

paul said he has been meaning to get a come-along winch from tractor supply anyways, so we drove over there, picked up the most badass one we could find and went back to the mudpit. after trying for a bit we still couldn’t get the xj unstuck.

as a last ditch attempt we called up steve down at advance autoparts who has a locked up tj on 35s with a nice warn winch up front. he said he’d be able to get him out after he closed down the store.

we all went back there one last time and steve went at it with his tj and a tow strap. after a good couple of minutes tugging the shit out of the xj he was finally able to get it unstuck. kudos to steve for not giving a damn about his truck and tugging like there’s no tomorrow.
